Why it sounds the way it does.
Gorjon ply, 18mm
Super Gorjon plywood at a full 18 millimetres. It is a dense, heavy board that holds its shape through a Bangladeshi monsoon and keeps the sides still, so the front plate does the work.
Nothing to adjust
Both steel snare wires are set at the bench and fixed there. No knob, no key, no drifting out of tune in the back of a rickshaw — you take it out of the bag and it sounds the way it did last week.
The one to learn on
Bass in the centre, slap at the top edge, and a clear enough gap between the two that a beginner can hear what their hand just did.
Built to the same standard
Same bench, same jigs, same pair of steel snare wires, same person checking it before it is boxed. It costs less because of the body material and the fixed mount, not because anyone hurried.
