Bangladesh’s first cajon workshop · Est. 2014

For 12 years we have been shaping pine and plywood into cajons in a small workshop in Rajshahi — one box, one pair of hands, one sound at a time.

The range

One workshop, four very different voices.

Same hands, same jigs, same care. The difference is what the body is made of — and that changes everything you hear.

Inside the box

Nothing in here is decorative.

Every part of a cajon is doing acoustic work. Turn the box, pick a part to see what it does to the sound — and tap the front plate to hear roughly where the low end sits.

Drag to turn it. Tap the front plate to hear it.

Part 1 of 6

Two steel snare wires

Every cajon we build is a snare cajon, and every one carries the same pair: two premium-grade steel snare wires, 20 strands each, lying flush against the back of the striking plate. Not brass, not iron — steel holds its tension and its brightness far longer. Hit near the top edge and they answer with a crack; move to the centre and they drop out of the way.

The process

Four steps, and the third one takes the longest.

In 2014 there was nowhere in Bangladesh to buy a cajon that was actually made here. So we started making them. The method has barely changed since.

  1. 01

    Choosing the wood

Boards are picked by knuckle. If a panel rings dead on the bench it never becomes a cajon, no matter how good the grain looks.

  2. 02

    Cutting and bracing

Panels are cut, edges jointed, and the interior braced so the sides stay stiff while the front is left free to move.

  3. 03

    Setting the snare

Two 20-strand steel snare wires are positioned by ear against the tapa. This is the slowest step and the one that decides the instrument.

  4. 04

    Finishing

Sanded to 400 grit, stained, lacquered, and left to cure. Then played hard for a while before it is allowed to leave.

A handcrafted MusicOn cajon costs between ৳5,500 and ৳8,500. What moves the price is the body wood: the Classic (৳5,500, fixed snare) and Creative (৳6,500, adjustable snare) are 18mm plywood, the Craft (৳8,500) is solid pinewood, and the Custom Series (from ৳8,000) lets you choose the wood — gamari, mahogany or pinewood — and add a built-in pickup (+৳3,500) or padded seat (+৳700). Every price includes a 12-month warranty. Delivery is free inside Rajshahi city and ৳350–450 anywhere else in Bangladesh.
